T31 Cadet Mk 3 in Flight

Air Cadet Historic Flight

This is the new website for the Air Cadet Historic Flight (previously 621 VGS Historic Flight), based at Nympsfield – home of the Bristol & Gloucestershire Gliding Club.

History

The original 621 VGS Historic Flight was formed in 2003 and consisted of current and past members of 621 Volunteer Gliding Squadron. Together with other like-minded individuals we have got together to form a group to preserve and operate former Air Training Corps gliders from the ‘wooden era’ .

After the original base at Hullavington was redeveloped the group moved, firstly to Swindon Gliding club and later to the Bristol & Gloucestershire gliding club at Nympsfield.

For the Historic Flight Nympsfield has provided a base to grow and offers the type of flying & soaring opportunities that only come at a well established ridge site. Over recent years a number of BGGC members have joined the HF group & are enjoying the chance to fly gliders which were commonplace in the 50’s and 60’s.

Future Plans

The original 621 VGS Historic Flight has grown & will soon comprise a nearly complete collection of “wood-era” Air Cadet gliders. Consequently we are considering how the Historic Flight should develop so that we can secure the long term future of this collection in an active flying environment.

While discussions are still in progress, the first step will be the setting up of a formal, “not for profit”, charitable organisation. We will then seek external funding to establish a permanent “home” where the gliders can be kept, restored, maintained and flown by Members, as well as being made more available to the wider public to view for historic & educational purposes.

621 VGS Historic Flight will become the Air Cadet Historic Flight Association – watch this site for updates
